The Illusion of Freedom

When life gets busy, we often find ourselves torn between two competing desires: freedom and security. We want to be free to make our own choices, to live our lives as we see fit, but we also want to feel secure, to know that our needs will be met and that we will be protected from harm. However, this desire for freedom and security is often an illusion. True freedom is not simply the ability to do what we want, when we want, but rather the ability to choose between action A or not-A in the same circumstances. This kind of freedom is found only in subjection to God and His truth.

The Biblical View of Freedom

The Bible defines freedom as choosing the one particular thing that is commanded by God and refusing the contrary. This means that our freedom is not just about making choices, but about making choices that align with God's will. When we choose to follow God's commands, we are exercising our freedom in a way that brings us true fulfillment and happiness. On the other hand, when we choose to go our own way, we are limiting our freedom and ultimately leading ourselves into bondage. This is why the Bible says, "I have set before you life and death, therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19). By choosing to follow God, we are choosing life, and by choosing to go our own way, we are choosing death.

The Sovereignty of God

But what about the sovereignty of God? Doesn't God's control over our lives limit our freedom? Not necessarily. While God is indeed sovereign over all things, including our choices, this does not mean that we do not have the freedom to choose. Rather, our freedom is a gift from God, and it is only in submission to Him that we can truly experience true freedom. As the Bible says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9). By recognizing God's sovereignty and submitting to His will, we can experience true freedom and live the life that God has called us to live.
