The Tension between Freedom and Security

The concept of freedom is complex and multifaceted, and it is often difficult to define or defend. However, as Christians, we understand that true freedom is found only in subjection to God and His truth. This means that our freedom is not an absolute, abstract concept, but rather a specifically spiritual and moral one, freedom from sin and freedom to live as God intended human beings to live. As the Bible says, "I have set before you life and death: therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19). This choice is not just about making a decision, but about submitting to God's will and living according to His principles.

The Illusion of Autonomy

The modern world often presents freedom as the ability to choose between action A or not-A, without any external influence or constraint. However, this view of freedom is based on a flawed assumption that humans are self-determined and autonomous beings. In reality, our choices are shaped by our circumstances, our relationships, and our own sinful nature. As the Bible says, "For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin" (Romans 7:14). Our freedom is not about making choices in isolation, but about making choices in light of who we are as God's children. The Path to True Freedom

So, how do we choose between freedom and security when life gets busy? The answer is not to prioritize one over the other, but to understand that true freedom is found in submitting to God's will and living according to His principles. This means embracing the constraints of God's law and His truth, not as a limitation on our freedom, but as a means of achieving true freedom. As the Bible says, "For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). When we prioritize God's will and His truth, we find that our freedom is not limited, but rather, it is expanded and deepened. We are free to live as God intended, free to love and serve Him, and free to live a life of purpose and meaning.
