What does it mean to 'rest in the Lord' when I'm feeling overwhelmed?

When we're feeling overwhelmed, it's easy to lose sight of God's presence and voice in our lives. We may feel like we're at a breaking point, and our exhaustion is an unavoidable feature of life this side of eternity. However, God wants us to rest in Him, even in the midst of chaos and confusion. To rest in the Lord means to entrust our problems to Him and leave them in His hands. It means to trust that He is sovereign over all creation and that He is working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28). We must remember that our exhaustion is not a result of sin, but of service to God. When we give ourselves fully to Him, we become exhausted, but we also become empowered by His presence and strength.

Resting in the Lord requires us to take a step back from our circumstances and remember where our source of power lies. We must remind ourselves that God saved and sanctified us to exhaust us, but not to destroy us. He wants us to be exhausted for Him, not by Him. We must look to Jesus as our source of comfort and rest, not just abstract principles. He says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). This means that we must come to Him, not just intellectually, but practically, and let Him give us rest. We must trust that He is working everything out for our good, even when we can't see it.

Resting in the Lord is not about being passive or complacent, but about being proactive and trusting in God's sovereignty. It means to cry out to Him, to seek His presence and guidance, and to trust that He will give us rest and peace. We must learn to slow down and make space for God to transform us, rather than trying to control everything ourselves. As the Bible says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). When we rest in the Lord, we experience joy and satisfaction, not just in spite of our circumstances, but because of them. We learn to trust in His goodness and sovereignty, even when we're feeling overwhelmed.
