As a parent, I've learned that it's essential to remind our children often that we love them and want the best for them. This can be as simple as telling them, "My child, you know that I love you and want only the best for you." Spoken words can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, so it's crucial to focus on positive affirmations. I try to tell my kids, Joshua and Rebecca, how much I love being their parent and how happy I am that God chose me to be their parent.

It's also vital to listen to our children, even when they're sharing insignificant issues. By doing so, they'll feel comfortable coming to us with their significant concerns as they grow older. When listening, I make sure to give them my full attention and remain at eye level, so they feel heard and understood. This helps build trust and strong relationships. When they do make mistakes, I try to use the opportunity to teach them and guide them, rather than simply lecturing or scolding.

When it comes to discipline, I try to use a gentle yet firm approach. I remind them that they are loved and valued, even when they make mistakes. I also try to model how to disagree without being disagreeable, and I encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings. By doing so, I hope to help them develop a strong sense of self-worth and a close relationship with God. As a pastor, I'm reminded that our children's eternal future is what truly matters, and I strive to guide them in a way that helps them develop a deep and abiding love for God.
