God's Sovereignty and the Mystery of Smell

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including the physical senses that He has given us. While we may not fully understand the workings of our senses, we can trust that God is in control and that He has given us these senses for a purpose. In the case of smell, God has given us the ability to perceive and enjoy the world around us, reflecting His own enjoyment of creation. As the Bible says, "We are an aroma of Christ to God, to the one" (2 Corinthians 2:15).

In the Old Testament, the concept of smell is often associated with sacrifice and worship. The aroma of burnt offerings and incense was seen as a pleasing sacrifice to God, reflecting His delight in the worship of His people. However, the Bible also teaches that our senses can be affected by sin and corruption. When we sin, our senses can become dull and our perception of the world around us can become distorted. As the prophet Amos says, "You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground" (Amos 6:6), the effects of sin can be like a foul odor that pollutes the air.

In the case of losing one's sense of smell, it can be a mysterious and frustrating experience. However, as Christians, we can trust that God is sovereign over all things, including our physical senses. While we may not fully understand why our sense of smell has been affected, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). As the Bible says, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). Even in the midst of uncertainty and mystery, we can trust in God's sovereignty and His desire to work good in our lives.
