Understanding God's Sovereignty in Our Senses

When we consider the question of why God took away your sense of smell, we must first recognize that our senses are a gift from God. They allow us to appreciate and understand His creation in ways that are unique to us as humans. As the Bible teaches, "We are an aroma of Christ to God" (2 Corinthians 2:15), suggesting that our lives and actions have a scent or impact on God. However, this does not mean that God Himself smells or experiences our actions in the same way that we do. Rather, He is pleased with the sacrifices and offerings we make to Him, even if they are not always pleasant or fragrant.

The Sovereignty of God in Suffering

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including our experiences of suffering and loss. When we lose our sense of smell, it can be a difficult and frustrating experience. However, we must recognize that God is not limited by our physical senses or experiences. He sees and knows everything that is happening in our lives, even if we cannot perceive it ourselves. As the Bible says, "God does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). This means that God's perspective on our experiences is not limited by our physical senses, but is rather focused on the spiritual and eternal implications of our actions and decisions.

Finding Hope in God's Mercy

In the face of suffering and loss, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about God's plans and purposes. However, the Bible teaches that God's mercy and love are always available to us, even in the midst of difficulty and pain. As the psalmist writes, "Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; O Lord, you preserve man and beast" (Psalm 36:5-6). This means that God's mercy and love are always available to us, even when we cannot see or smell the good things that He is doing in our lives. We must trust in His sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of uncertainty and difficulty. As the Bible says, "We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
