Understanding God's Sovereignty in Pain

The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign over all creation, including pain and suffering. He is not aloof or distant, but rather, he is present with us in our pain, holding us in his strong arms and comforting us (Psalm 55:22). God desires that there should be no physical pain in his creation, but in particular instances, he decides not to prevent it by a special act of his own (Psalm 34:15). This does not mean that God takes delight in our pain, but rather, he uses it as a means to draw us closer to him and to teach us valuable lessons about his love and character.

God's Purpose in Pain

Pain and suffering can be a means of spiritual growth and maturity. As C.S. Lewis once said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." (The Problem of Pain) In our pain, we are forced to rely on God and to seek him for comfort and strength. This can lead to a deeper understanding of his love and character, and a greater appreciation for the sacrifice he made for us on the cross. As Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

The Role of Sin in Pain

While God is not the author of evil, sin can lead to pain and suffering. The Bible teaches that sin can lead to affliction (Psalm 38:3-4), and that we should not think that our pain is a result of God's punishment (Romans 8:1). However, even in the midst of pain and suffering, God is present with us, holding us in his strong arms and comforting us. As the psalmist says, "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." (Psalm 4:4) In our pain, we can find peace and comfort in God's presence, and we can trust that he is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Ultimately, Jesus is the end, not just a means to an end. He is the one who gives us the strength and courage to face our pain and to trust in God's sovereignty.
