Your Question:
How can I still be happy when I'm in so much pain?
Answer:
As a pastor and a husband, I've seen my fair share of hardships and pain. But I've learned that happiness and pain aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, I believe that happiness is often found in the midst of pain, not despite it. When we're in pain, it's easy to get caught up in our own misery and let it consume us. But I've found that when we take a step back and examine our hearts, we can begin to see that our pain is often a result of our own interpretations and perspectives. As the Bible says, "The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." (1) This means that our thoughts and attitudes have the power to either intensify our pain or bring us joy, even in the midst of hardship. When we focus on our own emptiness and misery, it's like a boomerang that always returns, keeping us stuck in our pain. But when we choose to look up and focus on the good things in our lives, like the love of our family and friends, we can begin to find joy even in the midst of pain. For me, this has been a key part of my journey as a pastor and a husband. When I'm struggling with pain and hardship, I try to remember that God is always with me, and that He gives me the strength to face whatever comes my way. I also try to find ways to bring joy into my life, whether it's through exercise, spending time with loved ones, or reading a good book. By focusing on the good things in my life and seeking God's guidance, I've learned to find happiness even in the midst of pain. As the Bible says, "Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3).
