The Commodification of Identity: A Threat to Business Ownership

The Illusion of Ownership

The idea of owning one's identity is an illusion. Sociologist Robert Bellah notes that the contemporary commodification of identity is the dark underbelly of possessive individualism. This means that our identities are not truly our own, but rather are purchased from those who have a vested interest in our consumer choices. As we conform to the brand images of multinational corporations, we surrender our autonomy and become mere managers of someone else's assets.

The Freedom of Surrender

However, when we recognize that our identity is not our own, we are freed from the fear of loss. This fear is a hallmark of ownership, where one's identity is tied to their possessions and accomplishments. But when we surrender our identity to Christ, we are no longer burdened by the fear of losing what is not truly ours. Instead, we are free to live for Him, and to use our resources to advance His kingdom. This freedom is not found in the accumulation of wealth or possessions, but in the recognition that our true identity is rooted in Christ.

A New Sense of Identity

So, why did I lose my identity as a business owner? It was because I was living under the illusion of ownership. I thought that my identity was tied to my business, and that my success or failure was a reflection of my worth. But when I surrendered my identity to Christ, I was freed from this illusion. I realized that my true identity is not rooted in my business, but in my relationship with Christ. This newfound understanding has given me a sense of freedom and purpose that I never knew before. I am no longer burdened by the fear of loss, and I am free to live for Him.
