Your Question:
How do I heal from this?
Answer:
Healing from a deep, dark depression like the one I experienced requires a change in our theology of suffering. I had a faulty understanding that God loves me and wants to heal me, and when He didn't, I fell into self-pity and despair. However, the truth is that God's ways are not our ways, and He sometimes uses our struggles to get our attention and speak to us. To heal from this, we need to acknowledge our brokenness and our inability to self-save. We must realize that we are too wounded to put ourselves back together and that we need help from God. We need to ask Him to lift us out of the pit of unforgiveness, to speak through us, and to teach us how to walk through the walls we've built up to protect ourselves. We need to ask God to give us a new perspective, a new heart, and a new way of thinking. To restore our relationship with our kids when we've blown it, we need to ask for their forgiveness, acknowledge what we did wrong, and identify how our words hurt them. We must demonstrate to them that we live under the authority of Jesus and that we are changing and growing together in grace. By doing so, we will show them that we are committed to healing and wholeness, not just for ourselves, but for our relationships with them as well.
