The Loss of a Job: A Call to Re-Evaluate and Re-Align with God's Purpose

Understanding Job Loss as Providence

Losing a job can be a challenging experience, but it can also be an opportunity for spiritual growth and re-evaluation. As the Bible teaches, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over all aspects of our lives, including our career choices and job losses. Perhaps the job was not a good fit for our gifts and abilities, or maybe we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Regardless of the reason, losing a job can be a chance to re-evaluate our purpose and re-align with God's plan for our lives.

Identifying Purpose and Updating Life Plans

Our purpose in life is not defined by our job or career, but by our relationship with God and our commitment to living out our faith. As the Bible says, "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). Our purpose is to glorify God in all aspects of our lives, not just our career. If we lose our job, we may need to update our life plan to find a new path that aligns with our purpose. However, our purpose itself should not change. We should continue to commit to meeting with God daily, reading His Word, and living out our faith in all areas of our lives.

Receiving a Commission from Jesus Christ

Losing a job can be an opportunity to receive a new commission from Jesus Christ, as we discussed earlier. When we receive this commission, we are called to be absolutely devoted to our co-worker, which is God. We are freed to serve Him and live out our faith in all aspects of our lives. As the Bible says, "You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings" (1 Corinthians 7:23). We are not slaves to our careers or jobs, but slaves to God. When we lose our job, we should see it as an opportunity to re-evaluate our purpose and re-align with God's plan for our lives, and to receive a new commission from Jesus Christ to live out our faith in all areas of our lives.
