What does hope look like in the darkest night?

In the darkest night, hope can be a fragile and elusive thing. It is often threatened by the overwhelming presence of suffering and evil, and it can be tempting to mock hope, as if we can live without it. However, as George Steiner reflects, the human use of the future tense, the grammar of hope, is essential to our humanity. Hope is not a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but rather a fundamental aspect of the Christian life. It involves a continual looking forward to the eternal world, and it is not something that can be easily dismissed.

In the midst of darkness, hope can take many forms. It can be a desire for something better, a longing for a future that is not yet here. It can be an expectation of God's deliverance and restoration of his people. And it can be a trust in God's sovereignty, even in the midst of suffering. As the Psalmist says, "Hope in the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yes, hope in the Lord!" (Psalm 27:14). Hope is not a feeling, but a decision, a choice to trust in God's goodness and love, even when circumstances seem bleak.

In the darkest night, hope can be a source of strength and comfort. It can give us the courage to persevere, to keep going even when things seem impossible. It can remind us that God is still in control, that He is working out His plan for our lives, even when we cannot see it. And it can give us a sense of purpose and direction, a sense that we are not alone, that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. As the Apostle Paul says, "I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned to be content, whether it is by being filled or going hungry, or having abundance or being in need" (Philippians 4:11-12). Hope is not a luxury, but a necessity, and it is essential for living a life that is pleasing to God.
