Why is this happening to me when I've been a good person?

The concept of being a "good person" is often misunderstood. According to the Bible, humans have a natural tendency towards sin and selfishness (Romans 3:23, Matthew 7:11). This means that even when we try to do good, our actions can be motivated by a desire to look good or feel good, rather than a genuine desire to please God. In this sense, our goodness is not enough to save us from the consequences of our sin.

The Bible teaches that true goodness comes from God, not from our own efforts (John 15:5, Philippians 2:13). When we try to be good on our own, we can become prideful and self-righteous, which is a form of idolatry (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:10-18). This can lead to feelings of sadness and frustration when we fail to live up to our own standards or when others judge us harshly.

The key to understanding why we experience sadness and failure is to recognize that our worth and identity come from God, not from our own achievements or the opinions of others (Psalm 139:13-14, Romans 8:1-2). When we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, we can begin to see our failures and mistakes as opportunities for growth and redemption, rather than as evidence of our own worthlessness. By seeking God's help and guidance, we can learn to live in sync with our true nature and experience the joy and peace that comes from knowing we are loved and accepted by God.
