Understanding Prayer in Faith

Praying in faith means having a direct personal request to God for His intervention, whether it be for healing, raising the dead, or asking for grace and strength to live our separate lives (Philippians 4:6-7). It involves accepting God's provision through the fulfillment of His promises, as expressed in both act and attitude. This means trusting God for strength to get through the day, and trusting in His promises, which gives us confidence to say that we have received what we are asking for.

Prayer and Faith in the Christian Sense

In the Christian sense, faith is not a feat of psychological gymnastics, but rather finding and claiming the promises of God in every situation. It means being fully persuaded that God has the power to do what He has promised. Faith involves making logical assumptions based on God's promises, and trusting in His power to fulfill them. It's not about praying without evidence or logic, but rather trusting in God's character and promises.

Praying in Faith: A Personal Relationship with God

Praying in faith is a personal communion with a personal God, not an abstract force or a cosmic consciousness. It involves talking to God like a friend, and trusting that He is hearing and answering our prayers. This means proceeding from faith in Christ, prayer that gives expression to a unity with all that Christ stands for, prayer which seeks to set forward Christ himself. And the purpose of it all is the glory of God (The Gospel According to John, p. 646). When we pray in faith, we are not just asking for changed circumstances, but also seeking to be sanctified experientially, i.e., separated from sin and set apart unto God. Prayer has a built-in logic of mediation, a directionality, a grain, and when we pray in faith, we are trusting in God's character and promises, and seeking to glorify Him in all that we do.
