Does God See My Pain and Suffering?

Yes, God sees your pain and suffering. Jesus, who is God incarnate, knows our suffering intimately. He suffered in the flesh, and his capacity for suffering exceeds ours (Hebrews 5:8). When we suffer, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus suffered too, and that he understands our pain. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can trust that he will use our suffering to teach us and refine us, making us more like him (Romans 5:3-5).

God's sovereignty and goodness are not diminished by his allowance of suffering. Instead, he uses suffering to bring us closer to him and to refine us. As Job learned, suffering can be a means of encountering God and coming to know him more deeply (Job 42:5-6). When we suffer, we can trust that God is not aloof or distant, but rather, he is present with us, meeting us in our pain and promising to bring us through it. As the psalmist wrote, "You have seen my sufferings and know my tears; you have collected all my tears in your flask and have recorded them in your book" (Psalm 56:8).

As we suffer, we can ask God to reveal himself to us in our pain, to show us his presence and love in the midst of our suffering. We can trust that Jesus, who sees our suffering, will be there with us, and that he will use our pain to bring us closer to him. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We ourselves are already asking them. Suffering raises spiritual questions that cannot be ignored" (2 Corinthians 10:5). When we suffer, we are reminded of our need for God and our dependence on him. As we cry out to him, we can trust that he will be there, meeting us in our pain and bringing us through it. Ask yourself, "What am I trusting in right now?" Are you trusting in your circumstances or in God's presence with you? When you fix your eyes on Jesus, you can trust that he will be there with you, even in the midst of suffering.
