The Bible teaches that divorce is not God's original intention for marriage. In fact, Jesus quotes Genesis 2:24, which says, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." (Matthew 19:5) This verse emphasizes the lifelong commitment of marriage and the union between a man and his wife. Jesus also states that divorce is not permitted, except for the reason of unchastity, as seen in Matthew 5:31-32 and 19:3-9.

The Bible does make exceptions to the general prohibition of divorce. In Deuteronomy 24:1-4, Moses assumes that a divorce has taken place and regulates it. In 1 Corinthians 7:15, Paul indicates that a Christian may accept a divorce initiated by an unbelieving spouse. However, in all cases, the Bible emphasizes the importance of not initiating divorce oneself, but rather allowing God to work in the situation.

The Bible views divorce as a tragic and difficult option, but sometimes it is necessary due to the hardness of heart. In Matthew 19:8, Jesus states that divorce was not the aim of the Law, but a provision for mans hardness of heart. The Bible teaches that marriage is a lifelong union, and divorce should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Bible describes divorce and remarriage as adultery, as seen in Matthew 5:32. Therefore, Christians should strive to maintain their marriage vows and work towards reconciliation whenever possible.
