Your Question:
How do we prioritize love when the world is against us?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've often been asked how we prioritize love when the world is against us. The Bible teaches us that there's a hierarchy to love, where the higher love must always yield to the lower when they come into conflict. We rightly love God first, then others in our lives, and lastly ourselves. When the response of love would be unloving to the higher relationship, the lower must yield to the higher. In our lives, we often find ourselves in conflicts between loves. We may love our family, our friends, and even ourselves, but these loves can come into conflict with our love for God. The Bible teaches us that love for God trumps all other loves. This is why Jesus said, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). True love is a self-giving commitment, and our love for God must be our top priority. When we prioritize love for God, we begin to understand what it means to truly love others. We learn to love our neighbors as ourselves, not just because we feel a predilection towards them, but because we recognize that they are created in the image of God. As we love God, we become more loving towards others, and we begin to see the world in a different light. This is the kind of love that God expects from us, and it's only possible through a deep relationship with Him.
