The Nature of Deception

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am ... the truth" (Jn 14:6), emphasizing that there is nothing false in him. The devil, on the other hand, is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). When we lie, we speak according to our own nature, for we are created in God's image and are called to imitate him and be truth-tellers. Lies and deception are wrong because they are against God's very nature.

The Consequences of Lying

The commands of God are given because God himself loves truth and hates falsehood. Lying breaks a fundamental rule of God's character, and it is one way that God's people are recognized. When we lie, we dishonor God and diminish his glory. The Bible warns us that lying takes many forms, including deceit, false witness, and dishonesty in business and financial dealings. We are called to speak the truth in love, as Jesus did, and to avoid being hardened by sin's deceitfulness (Heb 3:12-13).

The Importance of Truth

God's people are called to be truth-tellers because God is truth. We are created in his image and are called to imitate him. When we lie, we contradict God's very nature and attribute falsehood to him. The Bible warns us that unbelief is not a misfortune to be pitied, but a sin to be deplored, because it contradicts the word of the one true God and attributes falsehood to him. We are called to regard truthfulness in speech as essential in our relationships with God and others, and to be direct and honest in our words and actions. By doing so, we honor God and reflect his character.
