What are my chances of survival?
The Probability of Survival: A Biblical Perspective
As we consider the question of our chances of survival, we must first acknowledge that the probability of life arising spontaneously is extremely low. The complexity of living cells is far greater than that of our digital watches, making it highly unlikely that life could emerge through random chance. This realization should prompt us to consider the nature of our existence and the source of our life.
From a biblical perspective, our existence is not solely based on chance or probability. Rather, we are created beings, designed and sustained by a loving and sovereign God. Our lives are not merely a product of random chance, but rather a gift from God, who desires a personal relationship with each of us. As the Bible states, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10). This understanding should give us hope and confidence, even in the face of uncertainty and mortality.
In the midst of life's challenges and uncertainties, it is easy to become detached and lose hope. However, as the Bible encourages us, "We are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Even in the face of mortality, we can have hope and confidence in God's sovereignty and love. As the apostle Paul wrote, "For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God" (Job 19:25-26). In Christ, we have the promise of eternal life and a new creation, which gives us hope and confidence in the face of uncertainty and mortality.
