The Purpose of Fighting

The concept of fighting is often viewed as a negative aspect of life, something to be avoided or minimized. However, as Christians, we must recognize that fighting is an inherent part of our spiritual journey. The Bible teaches us that spiritual growth and maturity require engagement in spiritual combat (Ephesians 6:12). This combat is not just about external battles, but also about internal struggles within our own hearts and minds. We must learn to engage in spiritual warfare, not just to defend ourselves against external attacks, but also to overcome our own sinful desires and fleshly tendencies.

The Battle for the Mind

The Bible warns us that the battle for our minds is crucial in spiritual warfare. If we lose this battle, we are defeated and unable to experience victory in our lives (2 Corinthians 10:5). This is why it is essential to engage in spiritual warfare, not just externally, but also internally. We must be prepared to fight for our minds, to resist the temptations and influences that seek to lead us away from God. As Jesus said, "The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, 'Behold, here!' or 'There!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21). Our internal battles are just as real and important as our external ones.

The Source of Fights and Quarrels

The Bible teaches us that the root cause of fights and quarrels is our own desires and fleshly tendencies. James 4:1-3 says, "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God." This means that our struggles with others are often a reflection of our own internal struggles. We must learn to engage in spiritual warfare, not just to overcome external enemies, but also to overcome our own sinful desires and fleshly tendencies. By doing so, we can experience victory in our lives and live in accordance with God's will.
