Can our faith be a source of strength in times of war?

The Foundation of Faith

Faith is not based on human strength or military power, but on the power of God (1 Cor. 2:4-5). As the Psalmist wrote, "The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be still" (Exodus 14:14). This means that our faith must be rooted in God's sovereignty and power, rather than in our own abilities or circumstances. We must trust in God's ability to deliver us from harm, even when we are facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.

The Example of Scripture

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of individuals who trusted in God's power and sovereignty, even in the midst of war. For instance, Gideon's small army was able to defeat a much larger enemy force because they trusted in God's power, not their own strength (Judges 7:1-8). Similarly, the psalmist wrote, "The Lord is our strong salvation; we will not fear. The Lord is our help and our shield; we will not fear" (Psalm 115:9-11). These examples demonstrate that faith can be a source of strength in times of war, even when human circumstances seem bleak.

The Call to Persevering Faith

In times of war, it is easy to lose faith and become discouraged. But Scripture calls us to persevere in our faith, even when we are facing difficult circumstances. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). This means that our faith must be exercised with patience and expressed in obedience, even when we are facing challenges that seem insurmountable. By trusting in God's power and sovereignty, and persevering in our faith, we can find strength and encouragement in the midst of war.
