The Conflict of Love and Sacrifice

In the midst of chaos, we often face a choice between love and sacrifice. On one hand, we may be inclined to prioritize our own interests and desires, even if it means sacrificing the well-being of others. On the other hand, we may be called to put the needs of others before our own, even if it means personal cost or sacrifice. This conflict arises because our natural inclination is to prioritize our own interests, but God's way of loving is through sacrifice.

The biblical way of resolving this conflict is to prioritize the higher relationship when the interests of others and ourselves come into conflict. We are called to love God, others, and ourselves, but if the response of love would be unloving to the higher relationship, the lower must yield to the higher. For example, if our love for a friend is in conflict with our love for God, we must prioritize our love for God. This requires us to surrender our own desires and interests and to seek to serve and love others in a way that honors God.

In practical terms, this means that we must be willing to count others better than ourselves and to serve and look out for their interests as well as our own. This is not a natural inclination, but rather a call to live a sacrificial life that reflects the love of God. As the Bible says, "Love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like the very flame of the Lord" (Song of Solomon 8:6). This kind of love is not just a feeling, but a choice that we must make every day, even in the midst of chaos. By prioritizing the higher relationship and seeking to serve and love others in a way that honors God, we can live a life of love and sacrifice that reflects the character of God.
