Your Question:

What's the meaning of life when it feels like everything's going wrong?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with feelings of hopelessness when things seem to be going wrong. But I believe that the biblical story offers a different perspective. It shows us that happiness is not just a hope, but also a memory, and that we are all kings in exile. This means that even in the midst of difficulties, we can find comfort in the knowledge that God is with us and will ultimately put things right.

The key is to develop a philosophical attitude of imperturbability, or what's called philosophical ataraxia. This means that no matter what happens, we can remain cool and keep a stiff upper lip. It's not about being detached or uncaring, but about trusting that God is in control and that He will work everything out for our good. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

When we focus on knowing God and trusting in His goodness, many of life's problems fall into place. We begin to see that even in the midst of difficulties, there are realities present that can sustain our hopes. We can pray for eyes to see and ask for hope, and we can practice it by remembering and meditating on God's story. As Psalm 27:4 says, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple."
