Can one person make a difference in a broken system?

The Power of One: A Biblical Perspective

As Christians, we believe in the sovereignty of God, who created the universe and governs it with wisdom and purpose. This means that even in the midst of a broken system, God is still at work, guiding and directing the course of events to bring about His desired outcome. From a biblical perspective, we see numerous examples of individuals who made a significant impact in a broken system, often against all odds. For instance, Esther, a young Jewish woman, risked her life to save her people from persecution in a corrupt and oppressive government (Esther 4:14). Similarly, Daniel, a faithful prophet, refused to compromise his values and integrity in the face of opposition from the ruling powers (Daniel 6:1-24). These stories remind us that one person can indeed make a difference in a broken system, even if it seems impossible.

The Importance of Personal Agency

The biblical account also highlights the importance of personal agency in bringing about change. We are not passive recipients of circumstances, but rather, we have the capacity to choose and act in response to our situation. As the apostle Paul writes, "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). This means that we can choose to align ourselves with God's values and principles, even if the world around us seems to be in opposition. Therefore, while the system may be broken, we as individuals have the power to make a difference.

We can start by recognizing the brokenness of the system and acknowledging our own role in perpetuating it. We can then choose to take responsibility for our actions and decisions, aligning ourselves with God's values and principles. Finally, we can take action, using our unique gifts and talents to make a positive impact in our communities and beyond. As the Bible reminds us, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden... Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16). One person can indeed make a difference in a broken system, and it starts with each of us taking personal responsibility and choosing to act in obedience to God's Word.
