The Bible's Teaching on Work

The Bible presents work as a sacred gift that is bound up with our priestly calling. This is evident in the book of Ecclesiastes, which notes that work is a gift of God and that there is no better alternative for a man than to find satisfaction in his work (Ecclesiastes 3:22). Similarly, the Bible teaches that work is a way to connect with a larger purpose and gain satisfaction (Ecclesiastes 3:22). In fact, the Bible exhorts believers to put their hearts into their work, seeing themselves as working for the Lord, not any human master (Colossians 3:23-24). This means that Christians are called to see work as part of their calling as humans, and to approach their work with a sense of purpose and meaning.

The Value of Hard Work

The Bible also places a high value on hard work and diligence. In the book of Proverbs, it is written, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom" (Ecclesiastes 9:10). The Bible also teaches that the purpose of work is to glorify God and to fulfill our priestly calling as humans. This is evident in the book of Genesis, where it is written, "God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on earth'" (Genesis 1:27-28). This passage suggests that work is a way to fulfill our God-given purpose as humans, to subdue and rule over the earth, and to bring glory to God. In this sense, work is not just a means to an end, but an end in itself, a way to live a life that is pleasing to God.
