The Biblical Perspective on Work

The Bible presents a unique perspective on work that is both encouraging and challenging. On one hand, it emphasizes that work is a sacred gift from God, a calling that is essential to our lives as humans. In Psalm 90:17, the psalmist prays that God will grant us the favor of his presence, so that our work will be blessed and successful. Similarly, in Colossians 3:23-24, Paul exhorts Christians to work hard and put their hearts into their labor, seeing themselves as working for the Lord rather than a human master.

Work as a Calling

The Bible teaches that work is not just a necessary part of life, but a calling that reflects our priestly role as humans. As image-bearers of God, we are called to be stewards of God's creation, to cultivate and care for the earth and its resources. This calling is not limited to traditional notions of work or occupation, but encompasses all aspects of our lives, including our relationships, our use of time and resources, and our contributions to society. In Ecclesiastes, the author notes that work is a gift from God, and that there is no better alternative for a man than to find satisfaction in his labor (Ecclesiastes 3:22).

Work and the Christian Life

For Christians, work is not just a means to an end, but an integral part of our faith and our relationship with God. As Paul notes in 1 Thessalonians 2:8 and 2 Thessalonians 3:8, our work should be motivated by a desire to please God and to further the faith of his elect. This means that our work should be characterized by integrity, hard work, and a commitment to excellence, all for the glory of God. By seeing our work as a calling and a sacred gift, we can approach our labor with a sense of purpose and meaning, and live out our faith in a way that honors God and brings glory to his name. Ultimately, our work is not just about what we do, but about who we are and whose we are in Christ.
