The Bible's Teaching on Divorce

The Bible teaches that God's original intent for marriage is permanence. Christ taught that divorce represents a reversal of God's will, and that marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman (Matthew 19:4-6). The Pharisees, however, viewed Moses' statements in Deuteronomy (24:1-4) as a provision for divorce, but Jesus saw it as a response to the hardness of heart of the people (Mark 10:5). The ideal of marriage is a covenant between two people, not a casual relationship that can be discarded easily (Genesis 2:24).

Scriptural Prohibitions on Divorce

The Bible prohibits divorce under certain circumstances. In Matthew 19:9, Jesus teaches that divorce is only permissible when there is unchastity (adultery) on the part of one spouse. In 1 Corinthians 7:15, Paul indicates that a Christian may accept a divorce initiated by an unbelieving spouse. However, God never allows Christians to initiate divorce themselves, even in cases of unchastity (Matthew 5:31-32). The Bible also teaches that remarriage after divorce is not allowed, as it is considered adultery (Matthew 5:32).

God's heart on divorce is one of opposition. In Malachi 2:16, God says that he hates divorce because it is a form of violence against one's spouse.
