The Value and Dignity of Human Life

God views human life with great value and dignity. This is evident in the fact that God has given humans the capacity to utilize general revelation to discern how God's world works and how best we can get along in it (Is 28:23-29). This capacity includes reason, creation, conscience, and human experience. The Bible teaches that humans are created in the image of God, which distinguishes us from the rest of the creatures (Gen 1:26-27). This image of God consists of the substantive, relational, and functional aspects of humanity.

The Nature of the Image of God

The image of God in humans is not just a psychological or spiritual quality, but a multifaceted aspect of humanity that includes our capacity for rational choice and deliberate action, our ability to love and relate to others, and our functional role as stewards of God's creation. The image of God is not just a static quality, but a dynamic and relational aspect of humanity that is expressed in our relationships with God and with each other. When we live in a proper relationship with God, characterized by the fear of God and ethical behavior, we find life and satisfaction (Ps 34:1-4).

God's View of Human Life

God sees human life as precious and valuable, not just because of our capacity for reason and rational choice, but because of our inherent worth and dignity as bearers of the image of God. God is not just a distant observer of human life, but an active participant who desires a personal relationship with us. When we recognize our relationship with God as the primary one in our lives, we are able to function in ways that are deeply satisfying in the long run. God's people speak the truth and seek peace, and they recognize that their relationship with God will satisfy them completely (Ps 34:1-4). In the end, God's view of human life is one of great value and dignity, and it is this view that enables us to live lives that are deeply satisfying and meaningful.
