What does Jesus say about worry?

Jesus teaches that worry is irrational, unproductive, and even pagan. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus forbids worry and anxiety, saying, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life" (v. 25). He emphasizes that God will supply physical needs for the follower who makes obedient discipleship his chief concern. Jesus also reminds us that He is a generous God who not only gives the kingdom to his children but is pleased to do so (Matthew 6:32-33).

Jesus' teachings on worry are not a call to be reckless or irresponsible, but rather to trust in God's provision and sovereignty. He says, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). This means that we should prioritize our relationship with God and His kingdom, and trust that He will take care of our physical needs. Jesus also reminds us that He is with us always, even in times of fear and anxiety, saying, "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. He was repeating what he had said earlier (14:1). Then his exhortation is faithful. These words to the fearful are so important that Jesus makes them his final words on earth: And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt. 28:20). The resurrection is Gods answer to fear. Jesus is alive.

In response to worry and anxiety, Jesus commands us to pray and trust in His provision. He says, "Stop worrying about anything! Pray about everything. Let petition and praise rise to God as one" (Philippians 4:6). This means that we should come to God with our concerns and trust that He will take care of them. Jesus also reminds us that He is faithful and will never leave us, saying, "Do not be afraid, for I am with you" (Genesis 26:24). By trusting in God's sovereignty and provision, we can overcome worry and anxiety and live a life of peace and confidence in Him.
