The Burden of Debt: A Biblical Perspective

As a follower of Jesus Christ, I want to address the issue of debt from a biblical standpoint. The Bible teaches us that we are to be good stewards of the resources God has given us (Matthew 25:14-30). This includes managing our finances in a responsible and wise manner. When we accumulate debt, we are essentially borrowing from others and promising to pay them back with interest. This can lead to a cycle of financial stress and anxiety that can affect not only our relationships but also our spiritual well-being.

The Consequences of Unpaid Debts

The Bible warns us about the consequences of unpaid debts. In Proverbs 22:7, it says, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." This verse highlights the reality that when we owe money to someone, we become beholden to them and may be forced to make decisions that compromise our values and principles. Furthermore, in 2 Corinthians 7:10, the Apostle Paul writes, "For Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." This verse suggests that our financial struggles can be a source of spiritual growth and repentance, but if we ignore our debt and continue to accumulate more, it can lead to spiritual death.

Seeking Freedom from Debt

So, how can we find freedom from debt? The Bible teaches us that we must be willing to take responsibility for our financial decisions and make changes to our spending habits. We must also seek help from God and from others when needed. In Psalm 119:71, David writes, "It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees." This verse suggests that our financial struggles can be an opportunity for spiritual growth and learning. By seeking God's guidance and wisdom, we can find the strength and courage to make changes and break free from the burden of debt. Ultimately, our goal should be to live a life that is pleasing to God and to use our resources to glorify Him. As we seek to manage our finances in a responsible and wise manner, we can find freedom from debt and experience the peace and joy that comes from living in obedience to God's will.
