The Dilemma of the "Normal" Life

The desire for a "normal" life is a common one. Many people long for a life that is predictable, stable, and free from the challenges and uncertainties of the Christian life. However, this desire can be a barrier to living a life that is truly fulfilling and meaningful. As the Bible teaches, "You cannot serve God and money" (Matthew 6:24). This means that if we prioritize our desire for a "normal" life above our desire to follow God, we will inevitably be disappointed and unhappy.

The Problem with a "Normal" Life

A "normal" life is often characterized by a focus on self-sufficiency and independence. We try to create a life that is free from the influence of God and His Word, and instead, we rely on our own strength and abilities. However, this approach is doomed to failure. As the Bible teaches, "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We were created to be dependent on God, and our attempts to live independently of Him will only lead to frustration and disappointment. Furthermore, a "normal" life is often marked by a lack of purpose and meaning. We may feel like we are just going through the motions, without any sense of direction or passion.

A Life of Faith and Purpose

So, why can't we just have a normal life? The answer is that a "normal" life is not what God has called us to. Instead, He calls us to a life of faith and purpose, where we are dependent on Him and His power. As the Bible teaches, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10). A life of faith and purpose is not always easy, but it is always fulfilling. It is a life where we are living for something greater than ourselves, and where we are making a difference in the world. If we are willing to surrender our desire for a "normal" life and instead, choose to follow God, we will find that we are living a life that is truly meaningful and fulfilling. As the Bible teaches, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
