The Impermanence of Our Possessions

We live in a world where possessions, including our homes, can be taken away from us in an instant. This is not just a physical reality, but also a spiritual one. As the Bible teaches, "You cannot serve God and wealth" (Luke 16:13). Our focus on material possessions can distract us from our relationship with God and hinder our spiritual progress. In fact, a house that is larger than our needs can be a hindrance to our progress towards heaven. This is because our hearts are often more attached to our possessions than to God.

As we see in the story of the man who sold his house to a developer, our possessions are not permanent. They can be taken away from us at any moment, and we will not be able to take them with us when we die. The Bible teaches that "you cannot take your house with you, but you will surely take your soul with you" (Ecclesiastes 5:15). This is a sobering reminder that our true wealth is not in our material possessions, but in our relationship with God. When we prioritize our relationship with God, we will not be distracted by the things of this world, and we will be better equipped to face the uncertainties of life.

The Bible teaches us that our homes should be a place of worship and prayer, not just a physical structure. As Isaiah 56:7 says, "My house shall be called a house of prayer." This is a reminder that our homes should be a place where we prioritize our relationship with God, and not just a place where we accumulate wealth and possessions. By keeping our focus on God, we can avoid the trap of prioritizing material possessions over our spiritual well-being. And when our homes are taken away from us, as they inevitably will be, we will be able to face the loss with confidence, knowing that our true wealth is in our relationship with God.
