Your Question:
What's the purpose of life if it's just suffering?
Answer:
As a Christian pastor, I've come to understand that the purpose of life is not happiness per se, but the knowledge of God. This understanding has brought me a sense of purpose and fulfillment, even in the midst of suffering. When we assume that God's purpose for human life is happiness in this life, we're mistaken. We're not God's pets, and He doesn't promise a comfortable environment for us. In fact, our rebellion against God and His purpose increases the probability of suffering in our lives. But, as the Scripture suggests, suffering can be an occasion for deeper dependency and trust in God. It's in these moments that we're reminded of the importance of our relationship with God and the knowledge of Him that we gain through trials. This perspective has helped me see that suffering is not pointless; it's an opportunity for growth and a deeper understanding of God's character. I believe that our purpose in life is to fulfill the reason that God created us: to glorify Him. When we're speaking with respect to God Himself, that's a good summary of our purpose. And when we think of our own interests, we make the happy discovery that we're to enjoy God and take pleasure in Him. This understanding gives me a sense of direction and meaning, even when life gets tough. It reminds me that there's a greater purpose at work, and that's a comforting thought.
