The Reality of Mortality and the Hope of Eternity

As we ponder the reality of mortality, we are reminded that our lives are but a vapor, cut short by illness or lived out to the weakness of old age (James 4:14). The unmistakable message of Scripture is that we will lose someone very close to us within the next 12 months, a member of our immediate family will die. While this prospect may evoke feelings of dismay, we are encouraged to continue trusting and not be grieved beyond measure (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Our focus should be on the eternal perspective, where death is not the end, but rather a transition to an everlasting life with God.

The Sovereignty of God and the Purpose of Life

In the face of mortality, we are reminded of the sovereignty of God, who can cause it to be so that our lives are cut short or prolonged (Psalm 139:13-16). We must learn to trust in His good will and let it suffice for us, even when we face the loss of something precious (Romans 8:28). Our lives are not an accident, but a deliberate creation of God, who has a purpose for each one of us (Jeremiah 29:11). We are not just a result of matter plus time plus chance, but a unique and valuable creation, made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

The Hope of Eternity and the Promise of Salvation

In the midst of mortality, we are offered the hope of eternity, where our relationships with loved ones are not shattered, but rather transformed into a deeper and more intimate connection with God (1 Corinthians 13:12). Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have been set free from condemnation and given a new life, placed into a new family, and given a relationship with God (Romans 8:1-2). Our slate is clean, and we are given a new beginning, where our lives can be lived fully surrendered to God, and our hearts can be filled with joy, peace, and hope, even in the midst of mortality.
