Can I Still Have a Sense of Trust?

In Matthew 9:29, Jesus says, "According to your faith let it be to you." This verse can be a powerful motivator to reevaluate our level of trust in God. However, this verse is often misunderstood as a means of control, implying that we have a certain amount of control over our circumstances. In reality, Jesus is pointing to the importance of faith in trusting God.

The Paradox of Trusting God

Trusting God is a paradox because it requires us to let go of our need for control and self-sufficiency. When we trust God, we are not trying to usurp His authority, but rather, we are surrendering our own desires and wills to His. This is a new way of living, one that is not based on our own understanding or common sense, but rather on faith. As Brother Lawrence wrote, we build our faith by "the practice of the presence of God" (see 1 Corinthians 2:11-14). When we are constantly talking to Christ and acknowledging His presence in our lives, we begin to trust Him more and more.

Faith and Trust in Jesus Christ

Faith and trust in Jesus Christ are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are closely linked. When we trust Jesus, we are not simply relying on a psychological crutch, but rather, we are placing our faith in the One who is sovereign over all creation. We are trusting in His goodness, His love, and His provision. As we learn to trust Jesus, we begin to see the world in a new light, and our faith grows stronger. We learn to go beyond all confidence in ourselves and other people of God, and we place our trust in the One who is our true destination. Ultimately, trusting Jesus Christ is not about having a sense of control, but rather, it is about surrendering our lives to His care and provision. When we trust Jesus, we can say with confidence, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).
