The question "What happens when a Christian dies?" can be broken down into two parts: what happens to the Christian after death, and what happens to the Christian's body. When a Christian dies, they are immediately taken into the presence of God. This is because their potential salvation provided in the Cross becomes actual and experiential when the believer places their trust in the Savior (Systematic Theology, p. 340). The Christian's soul is then sanctified by God, who supports and comforts the departing soul, making the transition to eternity a peaceful one (Systematic Theology, p. 340). This is a joyful expectation for the Christian, as they look forward to being in Christ's presence.

The second part of the question concerns what happens to the Christian's body after death. When a Christian dies, their body is returned to the dust from which it came, awaiting the resurrection of the dead when Christ returns (1 Corinthians 15:42-44). At this time, the bodies of all believers who have died will be reunited with their souls, and they will be raised in their perfect resurrection bodies to new life. This is a fact that has pastoral encouragement for us, as we need not fear death, not only because of the joy of being in Christ's presence, but also because of the hope of being reunited with our loved ones in their perfect resurrection bodies.

The death of a Christian friend or relative can be a difficult experience for those who are left behind. However, we can take comfort in the knowledge that our loved one is now in the presence of God, and that we will be reunited with them in the resurrection. This can also be a time of evangelism and discipleship, as we share the gospel with others and see them come to faith in Christ, just as we have. The death of a Christian can be a powerful reminder of the hope of eternal life and the importance of living a life that reflects Christian values and teachings. As we mourn the loss of our loved one, we can also rejoice in the knowledge that they are now with Christ, and that we will see them again in the resurrection.
