Can I even trust my own instincts when I'm so lost and scared?

The Problem of Fear and Trust

When we're lost and scared, it's natural to question our own instincts. Fear can be overwhelming, and it's hard to trust our own judgments when we're in a state of panic. This is especially true when we're facing unknowns or uncertainties. The Bible acknowledges this struggle, saying, "What are you fearing?" (Psalm 42:5). It's as if God is saying, "Come on, be honest with yourself. What are you afraid of?" The problem is that our fears can be rooted in a lack of trust in God's sovereignty over our lives.

The Source of Fear: Untrusting of God

Fear often arises from a lack of trust in God's goodness and control over our lives. When we don't trust God, we're more likely to trust in people, circumstances, or our own abilities. This is a problem, because when we put our trust in anything other than Jesus, fear will inevitably follow. As the Bible says, "There is no such thing as chance, or fortune; nor is there a readier way to gain the fear of God, and to put our whole trust in Him, than to be thoroughly versed in the knowledge of Him" (Proverbs 22:19). In other words, the more we know and understand God's character and promises, the more we'll be able to trust Him, even in the midst of fear and uncertainty.

Finding Trust in God

So, how can we find trust in God when we're lost and scared? The answer lies in God's own words: "What are you fearing?" (Psalm 42:5). He wants us to be honest with ourselves about our fears, and to trust in His goodness and sovereignty over our lives. When we put our trust in God, we'll begin to experience a new kind of trust – a trust that's not based on our feelings or circumstances, but on God's character and promises. As we learn to trust God, we'll find that our fears will begin to subside, and we'll be able to face the unknown with confidence and peace. As the Bible says, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18). When we trust in God's love and sovereignty, we'll find that our fears will be replaced with a deep sense of peace and trust.
