Why did I have to lose everything?
The Devastating Consequences of Sin
The Bible teaches that sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God's command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3). This act of disobedience brought about a profound change in the human experience, resulting in sorrow, pain, and loss. As the apostle Paul wrote, "When God made the earth and the first people, Adam and Eve, everything was perfect. There was no sin, no bad things, and no sadness" (Romans 5:12-19). The presence of sin in the world has brought about a multitude of problems, including loss, pain, and sorrow. This is evident in the lives of those who have experienced devastating losses, such as the loss of a loved one, a job, or a home.
The Purpose of Life
The Bible teaches that God created humanity to have a relationship with Him and to bring glory to His name (Psalm 119:37-40). However, sin has distorted this purpose, causing humanity to seek fulfillment in things that are fleeting and unsatisfying. As the apostle Paul wrote, "You are the accidental by-product of nature, a result of matter plus time plus chance. There is no reason for your existence. All you face is death" (Ecclesiastes 1:2-11). In contrast, those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ have discovered a new purpose in life, one that is centered on glorifying God and enjoying a personal relationship with Him. As Paul wrote, "I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:7-8).
Finding Meaning in the Midst of Loss
While loss and pain are inevitable consequences of sin, they do not have to define us. As Christians, we have the opportunity to find meaning and purpose in the midst of loss by trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness. As the apostle Paul wrote, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This does not mean that loss is easy to bear or that it is not painful. However, it does mean that we can find comfort and strength in God's presence, even in the midst of devastating losses. As we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, we can find meaning and purpose in the midst of loss, and we can live with hope and confidence in the face of adversity.
