Understanding God's Sovereignty and Our Financial Situation

The question of why God took away our retirement savings may be one of the most challenging and difficult to answer. We may feel like God has left us high and dry, or that He has forgotten about us. However, as Christians, we must remember that our God is sovereign over all creation, including our finances. He is the one who created the universe and sustains it, and He is the one who governs our lives, including our financial situations. When we trust in God, we must also trust in His sovereignty, even when things seem to be going wrong.

The Lie of Worldly Security

One of the lies that we may believe is that what we own has lasting value. We may think that our retirement savings, portfolios, and savings accounts can guarantee true stability amid the chaos of life. However, this is not the case. What we own is fleeting and can be taken away at any moment. Instead, we must trust in God's promise to supply our needs according to His riches in glory. We must remember that our financial security is not in our savings accounts, but in our relationship with God. When we put our finances under God's covering and do what He says to do with them, He will provide for us and we will have everything we need.

The Purpose of Financial Trials

So, why did God take away our retirement savings? Perhaps it was to teach us to trust in Him, rather than in our finances. Maybe it was to help us see that our security is not in what we own, but in our relationship with God. Or maybe it was to remind us that our time on this earth is short, and that we must prioritize our relationship with God above all else. Whatever the reason, we must remember that God is working all things together for our good, and that He is our Provider and our Savior. We must trust in Him, even when things seem difficult or impossible, and know that He will supply our needs according to His riches in glory. As the Bible says, "And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
