The Bible teaches that fasting is a spiritual discipline that can bring one closer to God. In the book of Joel, it is written, "Even now, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments" (Joel 2:12-13a). This passage suggests that fasting is a way to express repentance and a desire to return to God. In the book of Daniel, fasting is connected with sackcloth and ashes, indicating that it is a way to demonstrate humility and sorrow for sin. In the New Testament, Jesus teaches that fasting is a way to express dependence on God and to demonstrate loyalty to Him.

Fasting is not just about giving up food, but about spending time in the presence of God. Jesus says, "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full" (Matthew 6:16). Instead of trying to impress others with our fasting, we should focus on spending time with God and expressing our dependence on Him. Fasting can also be a way to increase our sense of humility and dependence on the Lord, as well as to express our sorrow for sin.

In addition to these benefits, fasting can also be a way to express our love for others and to demonstrate our commitment to God's will. In the book of Acts, the early church fasted and prayed before making decisions, such as choosing leaders for various roles (Acts 13:2-3; 14:23). Fasting can also be a way to increase our sense of spiritual strength and power, as well as to express our dependence on God in times of trial and hardship. Ultimately, fasting is a way to deepen our relationship with God and to experience spiritual growth and transformation. As Jesus says, "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matthew 6:16-18).
