God's Purpose in Creating the Rivers

The Bible teaches that God created the rivers for several reasons. One reason is to provide water for the animals to survive and even thrive (Ps. 104:10-13). God causes the waters to flow in the ravines (wadis), the seasonal streams of Israel, to give water to all the beasts of the field and make grass grow for the cattle (Ps. 104:10-13). This shows that God's creation of the rivers is an act of benevolence and provision for the creatures of the earth.

Another reason for God's creation of the rivers is to demonstrate His power and control over the forces of chaos and evil. The psalmist says, "The waters saw God coming and grew afraid" (Ps. 104:7). This is a reference to the ancient mythological image of the Creator God who is in control of the sea, representing chaos, and defeats it. By personifying the sea and the river and picturing them in full retreat, the psalmist evokes the ancient symbolism of the waters of chaos and evil that the Creator God subdues and controls.

The creation of the rivers also serves as a reminder of God's covenant with His people. In the Old Testament, the river was a symbol of God's presence and provision for His people. For example, when the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, God miraculously parted the waters, allowing them to pass through safely (Josh. 3:13-17). This event was a fulfillment of God's promise to His people, and it served as a reminder of His covenant with them. Similarly, the creation of the rivers is a reminder of God's covenant with all of creation, and His promise to provide for and sustain His people. As the psalmist says, "The river of God is full of water; you provide the people with grain, for so you have prepared for them" (Ps. 65:9).
