Biblical Answer

The purpose of suffering is multifaceted and complex. On one hand, suffering can be a means of discipline and correction, as God seeks to refine and mature us through trials and tribulations (Hebrews 12:1-11). Suffering can also be a warning, a megaphone to rouse a deaf world, as C.S. Lewis so eloquently put it (The Problem of Pain). It can be a means of spiritual growth, teaching us to fix our eyes on Jesus and to trust in His goodness and sovereignty, even in the midst of pain and uncertainty.

On the other hand, suffering can also be a mystery, a question that cannot be fully answered by human understanding. God's reasons for allowing suffering may not be immediately apparent, and we may struggle to see the purpose behind it. However, as the Bible reminds us, God is sovereign and all-knowing, and He has a plan to bring good out of even the most difficult and painful circumstances (Romans 8:28). Our task is to trust in His goodness and to look to Him for comfort and strength in the midst of suffering.

Ultimately, the purpose of suffering is not to destroy or defeat us, but to refine and transform us into the image of Christ. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). Through suffering, we can develop perseverance, character, and hope, and we can become more like Jesus, who suffered immeasurably in his service to others. So, even in the midst of suffering, we can find hope and purpose, knowing that God is working all things together for our good.
