Your Question:
What happens when we put others first when we're feeling anxious?
Answer:
When we put others first when we're feeling anxious, it can be a powerful way to shift our focus away from our own worries and concerns. As a pastor, I've seen this play out in my own life and in the lives of those I've counseled. When we prioritize the needs of others, it can help us to see that our own problems are not as insurmountable as they seem. By putting others first, we can begin to break free from the cycle of anxiety and worry that can so easily consume us. In fact, I believe that one of the key ways to overcome anxiety is to put God first in our lives. When we bring Him into the planning and decision-making process, we can trust that He will guide us and provide for us, even in the midst of uncertainty. This doesn't mean that we won't face challenges or difficulties, but it does mean that we can face them with confidence and faith, knowing that God is with us. As the psalmist says, "Search me, O God, and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Ps. 139:23-24). When we put others first, we're not only helping them, but we're also helping ourselves. By focusing on the needs of others, we can begin to break free from our own fears and worries. As Stephen Covey said, "We achieve inner peace when our schedule aligns with our values." When we prioritize the needs of others, we're more likely to be living in alignment with our values, and that can bring a sense of peace and contentment that can be hard to find when we're consumed by anxiety.
