Biblical Answer

My friend, I've walked with God for many years, and I've come to realize that anger is a complex emotion. While it's true that we're commanded to put away anger (Eph 4:31; Col 3:8), and it's one of the works of the flesh (Gal 5:19-20), I believe that anger can be a good thing under certain circumstances. For instance, Jesus was angry (Mk 3:5), and we're commanded to release our anger, rather than sinning in it (Ps 4:4; Eph 4:26).

As a pastor, I've seen this played out in the lives of believers. Anger at sin, even anger at the sinner, can be a good thing (2 Cor 7:11). Jeremiah was full of the fury of the Lord (Jer 6:11), and Paul was angry over the idolatry of the Athenians (Acts 17:16). It's not that we should be angry all the time, but rather that we should be slow to anger (Jas 1:19), like God himself (Ex 34:6).

So, can you still be a good Christian if you're angry at God? I believe the answer is yes, but it depends on why you're angry. If it's because you feel God is unfair or unjust, then that's a different story. But if you're angry at the sin or injustice in the world, and you're not directing that anger at God himself, then I think that's a righteous anger. It's a reminder that we're called to be in the front line, fighting against the results of man's cruelty, and that we can have real morals and moral absolutes because God is holy and just.
