Why Does God Allow Suffering?

Suffering is a complex and universal human experience. Many people struggle to understand why God allows suffering, especially when they feel they are doing everything right. The question of why God permits suffering is a difficult one, and there is no easy answer. However, we can explore some possible reasons and biblical perspectives on the matter.

One reason God may allow suffering is to achieve His purposes. Suffering that appears pointless within our limited framework may be seen to have been justly permitted by God within His wider framework. This is not to say that God delights in our suffering, but rather that He may use it to refine us and make us more like Him. Through suffering, we can become more like Christ and develop a deeper understanding of God's character. This is seen in the example of Job, who suffered greatly but ultimately came to know God in a deeper way and became a changed man.

Another reason God may allow suffering is to test our faith and trust in Him. When we experience suffering, we are often forced to re-examine our relationship with God and trust in His goodness and sovereignty. This can be a difficult and painful process, but it can also be a transformative one. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of God's character. Ultimately, God's reasons for allowing suffering are not always easy to understand, but we can trust that He is working all things together for our good (Rom. 8:28).
