Hope in the Midst of Unbearable Life

When life feels unbearable, it's natural to feel hopeless. However, as the Bible reminds us, hope is not something we can live without. In fact, it's a skill that develops over time and is a corporate venture that needs the reminders of the body of Christ. When we're faced with dashed hopes, it's essential to remember that hope finds in Christ not only a consolation in suffering but also the protest of the divine against the powers of evil.

Looking to God for Hope

In times of hopelessness, it's crucial to look to God for hope. We must wake ourselves up and look to Him, building our hope on Him. No matter how many things seem to be pressing in on us, we must push them aside and look to Him. As the Bible says, "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other." (Isaiah 45:22). This means that our hope is not based on our own strength or abilities, but on the power and sovereignty of God.

Practicing Hope

Hope takes practice, and it's essential to commit ourselves to a church where the story of God's redemption is told, and seek opportunities for daily reminders of God's love and promises. We must also be aware of the edge of hope, which refuses to surrender and sit passively while misery abounds. By looking to God and practicing hope, we can overcome even the most unbearable circumstances and find hope in the midst of darkness. As the Bible says, "Hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." (Romans 5:5).
