Why is God so silent when I'm screaming for help?
The Silence of God: A Biblical Perspective
When we cry out for help, it can be disconcerting when we don't seem to get an immediate response from God. The Bible teaches us that God is not silent, but rather, He has spoken to us through His Word. The reason we may not hear His voice is because we have not been sensitive to His presence in our lives. The Spirit of God speaks to us in gentle ways, but if we are not attuned to His voice, we may quench it, leading to a stifled spiritual life.
The Bible also teaches us that God's silence can be a sign of His presence. In Psalm 22:1-2, David laments, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me?" Yet, in the same psalm, David affirms God's presence and power. He knows that God has heard his cry and will act on his behalf. Similarly, when we cry out to God, we must remember that He is our helper, even in our present circumstances. We must learn to listen to God before speaking, and not try to fit His Word to our own ideas.
The reason we may not hear God's voice is because we have not learned to listen to Him. We prefer to listen to human testimonies rather than God Himself speaking to us. We are terrified of God's silence because we don't understand it. However, God's silence is not a sign of His absence, but rather, it is a sign of His presence. He is working in our lives, even when we don't see it. We must learn to trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of uncertainty and silence. As we do, we will come to understand that God's silence is not a sign of His absence, but rather, it is a sign of His presence, working in our lives for our good.
