Your Question:
How do I trust a God who allows suffering?
Answer:
My friend, I can sense the anguish in your question. How can we trust a God who allows suffering? As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with this very issue. But I want to offer a perspective that may bring some comfort. You see, God's people can take hope in the fact that our suffering is not in vain. He is gracious and loving enough to make it count, to use it for our good. This is not to say that God causes the suffering, but rather that He is present in the midst of it, working to bring about redemption and growth. As Diane said, "He will use our suffering for our good." This is a promise that we can hold onto, even in the darkest of times. And I believe that God's capacity for suffering exceeds ours, just as His knowledge exceeds ours. He has walked the path of suffering Himself, in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. So, how can we trust a God who allows suffering? We can trust Him because we know that He is working all things together for our good, even when we can't see it. We can trust Him because He has promised to use our suffering for our growth and redemption. And we can trust Him because He has suffered Himself, and has come out the other side, victorious. As the Bible says, "If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him."
