Understanding God's Sovereignty and Human Responsibility

When we ask why God let our family member betray us, we may feel like God is distant, uncaring, or even angry with us. However, this perspective overlooks God's sovereignty and human responsibility. The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful and all-knowing, and He works out everything for our good (Romans 8:28). At the same time, we are responsible for our actions, and our choices have consequences. This paradox can be difficult to understand, but it's essential to grasp the balance between God's sovereignty and human responsibility.

The Example of Judas and Jesus

The story of Judas and Jesus provides a powerful example of God's sovereignty and human responsibility. Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, but He didn't intervene to prevent it. Instead, Jesus chose to forgive Judas and even told him to do what he was going to do quickly (Matthew 26:24-25). This story teaches us that God's sovereignty doesn't mean He condones or causes evil. Rather, He works out His plan, even when it involves human sin and failure. We can trust that God is working everything out for our good, even when we don't understand why He allowed a family member to betray us.

The Call to Forgiveness and Restoration

When we're betrayed by a family member, it's natural to feel hurt, anger, and resentment. However, the Bible calls us to forgive and seek restoration. Jesus taught us to forgive others as we've been forgiven by God (Matthew 6:14-15). When we forgive, we're not forgetting what happened, but we're releasing the burden of resentment and choosing to trust God's sovereignty. God's forgiveness is not based on our worthiness, but on His love and mercy. He paid the price for our sins on the cross, and now He calls us to pay the price to reconcile ourselves to others. By choosing forgiveness and restoration, we demonstrate our trust in God's sovereignty and our commitment to living a life that reflects His values.
