Understanding Humility

Humility is a virtue that reflects a commitment to embracing truth wherever it leads, including adjusting one's theological understanding or refining one's moral judgments. It is not thinking "I'm no good," but rather having a realistic picture of oneself, recognizing strengths and weaknesses. True humility keeps a proper handle on reality and does not overblow secondary theological differences.

The Antidote for Pride

Pride is an exalted, inflated opinion of self, a lie that takes a realistic picture of oneself. It is an attitude that leads to self-destruction and makes people take themselves far too seriously. Humility, on the other hand, is the Christlike attitude towards oneself, supremely exemplified in the readiness to forgo one's own rights, as seen in the incarnation and cross of Jesus Christ. True humility keeps a proper handle on reality and does not overblow secondary theological differences.
