Why does God allow us to suffer when we're doing the right thing and still get hurt?
The Nature of Suffering
Suffering is a reality that affects us all, regardless of our actions or circumstances. It arises from living in a sinful, fallen world, and sometimes it is because God is disciplining us for our good. However, we must not think that God is punishing us for our harm, as Romans 8:1 assures us that we are taken by Christ and are no longer under the law. The Bible also says that suffering arises, in part, from human disobedience and sin.
The Purpose of Suffering
While we may not understand why God allows us to suffer, we can trust that those reasons are for our ultimate good. God has a plan to eliminate pain and suffering from this world, but until then, Christians are to turn to Him in their suffering. Suffering can be a teacher, teaching us as we fix our eyes on Jesus. However, it only truly teaches us if we avoid him in the midst of pain. We must not let suffering lead us to bitterness, but rather to a deeper understanding of God's sovereignty and love.
The Role of God in Suffering
God does not exist to prevent suffering, but to meet us in our suffering and bring us through it. Jesus is not a means to an end to change our circumstances, but the end itself. He is the resurrector, the one who brings new life out of death. When we suffer, we should not think that God is not loving us, but rather that He is working in us to conform us to the image of Christ. We can trust that God's reasons for allowing suffering are for our ultimate good, and that He desires to bring us through it to a place of greater joy and intimacy with Him. As C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." (The Problem of Pain)
