I. The Existence of God and the Deity of Jesus Christ

The existence of God and the deity of Jesus Christ are two related yet distinct concepts. The Bible teaches that God exists and that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah, and the Savior of humanity. The existence of God can be established through reason, evidence, and historical research. As Pannenberg notes, "The basic agreement is striking. Dogmatics seems in this case to have preceded historical research."26 This agreement is evident in the works of theologians such as Werner Elert and Paul Althaus, who demonstrate Jesus' divinity through his pre-Easter claims.

II. Jesus' Claims of Divinity

Jesus made several claims about his unique relationship to God, including his statement in John 8:58, "Before Abraham was born, I am!" This statement is a direct claim of divinity, as Jesus identifies himself with the name of God, "I AM." Additionally, Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, the Messiah, and the Savior of humanity. These claims are supported by the evidence of Jesus' life, miracles, and resurrection, which demonstrate his divinity and messianic claims.

III. The Necessity of Faith

While reason and evidence can provide a strong case for the existence of God and the deity of Jesus Christ, ultimately, faith is necessary to accept these truths. As the Bible teaches, "Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17). Therefore, while reason and evidence can provide a strong foundation for our faith, they are not a substitute for faith itself. We must come to a place of faith in Jesus Christ, trusting in his claims and promises, and surrendering our lives to him. In doing so, we can experience the joy, peace, and fulfillment that come from knowing Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
