What Now? A Christian Perspective on Terminal Illness

Embracing the Sovereignty of God

When faced with a terminal illness, it can be challenging to understand God's plan and purpose. The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign over all creation, and He works all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). This includes our circumstances of suffering and illness. While it's natural to ask "Why?" and seek answers, we must also acknowledge that God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Finding Hope in Christ

In the midst of suffering, it's essential to find hope in Christ. The Bible reminds us that Jesus came to call the sick, not the healthy (Mark 2:17). Our faith in Him is not based on our circumstances, but on His promise to be with us always, even in the midst of suffering (Matthew 28:20). We can trust that God is working in our circumstances, even if we don't understand them. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Philippians 4:11).

Living with Purpose and Hope

While a terminal illness can be a challenging and difficult experience, it can also be an opportunity to live with purpose and hope. We can use our time to serve others, to share the Gospel, and to point people to Christ. As the Bible says, "In everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We can also trust that God will use our suffering to bring glory to Himself and to help others who are struggling. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). May we find hope and purpose in Christ, even in the midst of suffering. May we trust that He is working all things together for our good, and that He will use our suffering to bring glory to Himself. May we live with purpose and hope, even in the face of terminal illness.
